Frequently Asked Questions
What happens in therapy?
At Self Portrait, therapy is client-led, which means that you dictate what topics are explored. Generally, the topics that are talked about are challenges that you have been facing. I can then help you to explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to foster growth and healing. At Self Portrait, you also have the option of making art to facilitate this process.
How long does therapy take?
Duration varies. Some people see improvements in a few sessions (short-term therapy), while others benefit from ongoing support (long-term therapy).
Is therapy confidential?
Therapy is confidential but there are limits to confidentiality for safety reasons. These include, but are not limited to:
-
If there has been a disclosure of child abuse or neglect. Even if the event occurred in the past, a report may need to be made if there is reason to believe that children are currently at risk.
-
If your therapist has reason to believe that you may harm yourself or someone else.
Can therapy help?
Many people benefit significantly from therapy, especially when they’re committed to the process and find the right therapeutic match. Art, in particular, has been found to be a beneficial tool. It has been found to facilitate the processing of trauma, increase relaxation, reduce stress, and encourage emotional regulation.
Can I do therapy online?
Yes you can! No matter where in the world you are, you can reach out for one-to-one art therapy sessions via video call. In your email, let me know that you would like to avail of online therapy.
Can I stop therapy whenever I want?
Continuing with therapy is a personal choice. You can decide whenever you want to stop therapy. If this is your decision, I recommend letting me know so that you can have one final closing session to wrap it up.
What if I don't know what to talk about?
As your therapist, I can provide some jumping off points, or you can create art if you are open to the creative process.
What if I don't want to do the art?
The art is there as a tool to help with processing, but it does not have to be used if you are uncomfortable with it. Just let me know that you dont want to do art.
